Paul was a teacher of mine and I can vouch for his understanding of everything in this book.It is very complex and technical, and he seamlessly connects Asian Medicine with Modern Western Science. It will likely fly over the head of the average person who has the attention span of a squirrel, but if you dedicate the time and effort to study what is in this book, you will be so much better off than the average person. Again, I can vouch personally for that. The recipes are brilliant and easy to follow, and that is worth the price of the book. This is a common text book for Acupuncture students and should be REQUIRED reading for all med-school students, because they know absolutely nothing about food, nutrition, eating, or anything of the sort. Perhaps if they did, patients would find better outcomes.

Fantastic book! As I've gotten more into cooking and using fresh, organic ingredients for making dinner, I love popping open this book to learn more about the vegetables I'm eating and ideas for new ones to try. I find the facts on how other cultures have used food over the centuries fascinating, and the energy properties of the foods. Food items are not just tangible items we consume in our bodies physically - they have a huge role in our mental, emotional and spiritual states. The US is not educated enough on the healing properties of food. We are all told as kids "eat your vegetables" but rarely is it ever taught why and the details behind them. This is a must have book for families wanting to educate themselves on healthy eating!

This book is quite an encyclopedia, good for anyone who wants detail. After 3 months of constipation on the Bulletproof diet, I turned to TCM for help. I looked up my symptoms, added the foods Pitchford recommended (which were "cold" foods such as tofu, seaweed, miso, bittermelon, citrus, bananas) and the the constipation cleared up within a week. This book's diet recommendations differ from Bulletproof and I've had to custom-create my own diet plan, still experimenting with that. Interestingly, many things Bulletproof complains about -- candida, phytic acid, oxalic acid, etc -- are also mentioned here. Overall this book made me a believer in TCM!

This book is HUGE, 750 pages of amaziness! So worth every penny, you will not regret buying this book! This book is packed full of information, there is just enough information on TCM and about different illnesses, quite a bit on liver health and how it affects several areas of the body, I found very informative. Also a lot on the whole foods aproach and foods that are destructive to you body and the reasons why they should be avoided. There are recipes to try and for some a new way to look at your current constitution and if it is lacking you can determine which aproach to try to restore balance. Overall a great book, and a must for anyone who is interested in healing their body with whole foods.

This book is incredible, it’s huge and full of so much interesting information, addressing a number of issues that can be addressed with food. This book also includes a ton of recipes and cooking tips! I can’t believe there is so much amazing information, and the book really isn’t that pricey, way less expensive than a textbook!

I was vegetarian from the time I was 12 to 21 and then off and on after. In the past year I have found that despite supplements and additions of b12 and iron in my diet I was suffering from all the symptoms of b12 and iron deficiency. My moods had never been very stable, my periods always came with much PMS. We were looking into whether or not I was bipolar. I looked into many options, Naturopathic medicine, herbalism, aromatherapy, shamanism, western medicine, psychiatry, yoga and then I found this book. After reading it I came to the hard conclusion that I would try eating meat. It was never a choice I felt comfortable with but faced with my life's collapse and feeling that diet and exercise was a stronger medication than any mental health medication I tried it.I immediately felt the effects. The exhaustion, the mood swings, went away. Months later the PMS went away. A few more adjustments to my diet including eliminating eggs and nuts, which I found created too much excess.. and my anger, my irritation dissolved. Leaving me with a much more peaceful life, a more peaceful mind. This was from me reading a book, not talking to a doctor. This book is comprehensive, and easy to use so much so that I could change my life. It was as if Paul Pitchford was sitting in the room talking with me. A couple of times reading the sections that related to me and I had a workable plan. Putting the plan into action I immediately saw my life transform. So please don't put your health and body into a stereotype. This book helped me transform my life! I want to share it with you because each person is unique in what is best for them. Sometimes people are telling you to do this or that because it will make you healthy; raw food, vegetarianism; or because it is good for the earth, veganism. That if you are sick you should take this medication or accept a label for what is wrong with you. When in reality if you change the foundation of your life through diet and exercise until you find what is right for you.. your life and the way you think can transform. But you are unique. This book recommends a vegetarian diet, but empasis is put on finding what works for you. There is a disease and illness guide, sections of vitamins and minerals and what that looks like for your body in excess and deficiency. Combining Chinese medicine and nutrition you have all the tools you need to look at yourself critically, to heal, to grow, to thrive.

As an acupuncture physician I've found this is an incredibly useful resource. While we had some food therapy training in school it wasn't really enough to be as useful as it could be. This book has significantly improved my food therapy approach to the extent I cover food therapy now with almost all my patients and have seen an improvement in many areas for those patients that actually listen to my advice. If it was up to me I would make this book one of the required texts for every acupuncture school. Given the virtual, if not complete lack of training that MD's have in nutrition, it should also be required reading for medical schools.
