Review
Mixing recollections with a supernatural Hamlet-inspired theme, her watercolor-tinged illustrations add a wonderfully ethereal layer to an already nuanced offering. Defying genre boundaries, Thrash has proven herself a capable memoirist able to pinpoint her own pivotal life moments, turn them into art, and take risks with conventions. Nearly all characters present as white. A thoughtful and compelling exploration of adolescence.—Kirkus Reviews (starred review)The author/illustrator looks back on her teen years with a pitch-perfect blend of caustic humor, melancholy, and tenderness, depicting her younger self’s frustration with her wealthy, ignorant cohorts and her growing understanding of her own privilege...Thrash boldly mixes memoir and fiction for a perceptive exploration of her past that will resonate profoundly with readers of Honor Girl, Laurie Halse Anderson and Emily Carroll’s Speak: The Graphic Novel, and Katie Green’s Lighter Than My Shadow.—School Library Journal (starred review)This should resonate with readers looking for unusual realistic fiction that doesn’t shy away from difficult themes.—BooklistIn a closing note Thrash comments on the facts at the core of her tale—privilege, loneliness, coming out, and yes, a lost cat—and how she reconciles memoir with ghost story. Readers who met Maggie in her Camp Bellflower summer will be happy to see her work her way toward acceptance.—Bulletin of the Center for Children's BooksThrash’s bone-dry observational humor stays provocative...and her rugged draftsmanship and solid toolbox of visual storytelling techniques can handle any emotional register with honesty: teen ennui; cold exchanges with her parents; angry jabs at the rich, bigoted white boys at her school; and the chilling dreams that haunt Maggie’s nights.—Publishers WeeklySimultaneously a coming-of-age tale about a lonely teenager and a ghost story, Thrash's spooky storytelling is a clever tool to contextualize family and identity.—Shelf Awareness for Readers[Thrash's] original, challenging, tragicomic story forges new territory in the world of queer storytelling.—Lambda Literary

This is the story of what happens in a young girl's soul when her father is emotionally absent, and how one girl came to terms with it, and with her father.Hidden within the witty humor and the whimsical style are great wisdom and deep pathos; in fact, the contrast serves to accentuate them. Maggie has the capacity to sincerely laugh at her own genuine pain, and the courage to invite us to share in the dark merriment. She fearlessly opens her heart for her readers' entertainment and edification, resulting in something much more than a graphic novel for teenage girls--something that deserves to be taken seriously as literature.
I really liked this book, but I liked her other book "honor girl" better. This book does a good job telling a story from a depressed teens point of view. I think other teens can be probably really relate.
Different, but just as incredible, as Honor Girl. Lines took my breath away and it really makes you think about our place, our response to life, and loss. Excellent, definitely recommended.
This is a strange and strangely moving book that deals with some quietly universal themes in a very unique and nuanced way. She (the author) has also really taken a chance with the use of an unusual story telling element, and I found that it works surprisingly well with the story.A major theme in this book is absence; what is missing, what has gone missing, and what of that can or cannot be restored. Another is what may be randomly unearthed or may surface during a personal transition state, when "normal" has been temporarily suspended. For one non-spoiler example of "missing" things: she has already come out as gay and while the people around her are thankfully not taking part in any negative confrontations -- it is as if everyone (everyone!) is in agreement to simply "ignore it away" as if she never had said a word on the topic, let alone already actually come out. This bizarrely active yet subtle erasure is actually hugely important in this book - not that it is her biggest problem or the book's theme, but that her life currently has this element of people not reacting or engaging in what would normally be more predictable ways -- in multiple areas of her life -- and this odd environment leaves her unmoored and isolated as she tries to solves a (real) household mystery on her own, while finding and uncovering a wholly different revelation about the household she is in.
As with her first graphic novel, I enjoyed the simplistic art style Thrash has and her plain storytelling. I feel like this is a more relatable read for someone who more in Thrash's privilege class (white, able-bodied, and seemingly comfortable to well off).
