I simply loved this book. I forced myself to stop reading because I was in serious danger of finishing it in one sitting and I wanted the experience to last. I couldn't put it down for long, though, because I finished it in less than two days. It made me cry, it made me happy, it made me think about my own horses (and dogs), it made me think about what I'm doing and not doing to improve this world, and it made me rethink how I treat my own animals. Of course, I would recommend this to my horse friends, but I would also recommend it to anyone who needs to be encouraged that there are still good people doing good things in this world. The stories are entertaining, heartbreaking, and heartwarming.Melanie is an amazing woman doing amazing things, but more than that, her outlook despite the horrors she sees first hand, is remarkable. She doesn't presume to judge a soul - equine or human. She simply takes care of the creatures that cross her path. I think Mother Teresa said something to that effect, also. It's so true - if we just cared for the animals (and people) that are put in our own path, this world would be infinitably better.Beautiful book. Beautiful writing. Beautiful person. I can't wait to read her other books.
I am in awe of Melanie Sue Bowles' devotion and grace. Her generous spirit gives readers the strength to see beyond the pain of abuse to healing for these beautiful horses. I enjoyed reading this book from cover to cover in just one day. The author is an amazing story teller and an awesome writer. LOVED the stores of each horse + the insights into the spirituality of horses and the good and evil that comes into our lives. The author has obviously transformed evil into good and more importantly--focused that good on making a difference--most importantly on the lives of horses.You cannot read this book and not be impressed...or cry...or want to make a difference in the world as well. Thanks for all that you do.
Beautifully written essays about some of the beloved horses rescued and now living out their lives at Proud Spirit Horse Sanctuary with the sanctuary owners, Melanie and Jim and their pack of also rescued dogs. Oh, and don't let me forget the pigs. It is easy to read and the short segments of the essays meant I didn't need an expanded amount of leisurely time to read I could relax and enjoy during briefs moments of peace. Combined with Hoof Prints: More Stories of Proud Spirit and Dogs of Proud Spirit the reader can vicariously enjoy and sense the love this couple has for animals.
