I have raised multiple dogs but really needed a refresher as I just brought home my first puppy in many years. This book offers solid, practical advice. The mantra that your puppy should be initially attached to you, under your direct supervision, outside playing or in a pen has been so helpful in terms of house breaking. In two weeks, only one in-house accident and that was my fault for opening his pen and not taking him directly outside. This book helps to simplify the training process and helps you to understand from the dog's perspective. I have noticed some critical comments re tethering the dog to you if you work. As someone who has also raised dogs while working full time, I would note that your dog should be safely confined or supervised while you are at work. When you are home, having the dog attached to you is easy, helpful and they learn quickly that if they behave properly while tethered to you that rewards can come. My eleven week old puppy sits in the kitchen calmly off leash and waits for a treat as opposed to zooming around like a wild child. A very helpful book.
I finished it in about an hour or so. It's very short and not incredibly detailed -- if you are someone interested in dog training and have read other dog training literature you will not learn anything from this.For brand new, I just got an 8 week old puppy owners who have never thought about dog training, this is a decent read. There are a lot of complaints that it is not practical to spend 24/7 with your puppy...I tend to agree. The whole concept is hyperbolic (see the word "perfect" in the title), and I don't think puppy training should have been approached like this. However, I also think that if you are not willing to take some time off work to train your new puppy, you shouldn't get one. Allocating at least 4 hours a day specifically to your new puppy is a reasonable thing to expect. But being tied to a puppy for 14 hours is a little extreme.
First of all, don't think that by buying this book and 100% adhering to the advice that you will have a "perfect" puppy - or anything close to one - in 7 days. It's unrealistic to think that puppy training can happen so quickly. Although the author addresses that she is a professional dog trainer so your results may vary, most professional trainers would say that many of the behaviors in this book take up to a year to perfect. My biggest gripe with the content is that the author says she got her Blue Heeler puppy sitting near her and entertaining itself calmly for up to 2 hours while she worked on the computer. No matter how much training you do with your puppy or how much exercise it gets, teaching your dog to settle and play calmly enough to get work done is usually a LONG process. It's a ton of redirection and rewarding - I tried this with my 8 week old puppy and did everything the book said, but puppies simply do not have the attention span to just "chill" for that long. Either the author's puppy was very low energy for its breed, or she was doing a lot of extra work aside from what is described in the book.All that said, there is still some really good advice in the book for a new or inexperienced puppy owner. The "learn to earn" system is a powerful tool in the early stages of puppy training and helps to build a great foundation for obedience in the first few weeks. This book uses 100% positive training and is up to date with the newer behavioral science on dog training. It has a great section on socialization and we got a lot of use out of the associated online checklist. As far as the training methods, they're decent, but sometimes are overly complicated or strangely worded. We had more luck with Zak George's Youtube channel when it came to directed training.All in all a decent resource, but I would recommend consulting other guides or videos as well.
I've had several dogs, and used standard training methods with them but my last dog has been especially challenging because though he learned quickly to obey commands, he waits for the command to behave rather than behaving on his own. When I got a puppy two weeks ago, I wanted him to internalize polite behavior instead of waiting for me to command it so I decided to try Dr. Sophia Yin's "Learn to Earn" program in which the puppy only gets their food as part of training and is taught from the very start to sit before receiving any attention. Within just a few days, my puppy was sitting on his own before he got fed, when he wanted to be picked up, before going out the door, and even sitting patiently while I put his harness on him. Granted, some of it may be his personality but he is already way more polite and easy to live with than my 4 year old dog. I am fortunate to be able to work from home so I had the time to do the training and keep him tethered to me the first week. If you can't do this, you would probably need to take a week of vacation when you got your puppy in order to do the program properly, but so far, it has been absolutely worth the time. Even as I write, puppy is politely lying at my feet chewing a bone as he learned to do the first week I had him on the tether. I've started my older dog on the program to see if he can learn better impulse control but I'm guessing it's going to take a lot more than a week with him!
If you are into positive reinforcement training, this is the only book you need. Dr Sophia Yin, writes everything you need to know from when you first get your puppy and as your puppy grows. So informative. Very easy to read and understand and follow. Especially think it's important to get when your puppy is still young to see how to properly socialize your pup from a very early age. Would recommend this book to anyone who has a dog.
