Being from Montana and a former basketball player turned coach, this was a story close to home. We have all played Indian teams in Montana and know that their talent is great, but is usually wasted after high school. Sad story that is on repeat in most cases.
As someone who has lived and worked on a reservation for nearly seven years, I found Mr. Colton's story an extremely accurate picture of life on the rez. There is high unemployment because of the rate of alcoholism. It is common for grandparents to be the major influence in their grandchildren's lives. The lack of discipline and direction is common. I found it a great story of triumph that Sharon could rise above her circumstances and complete some college classes all while raising her sons and living with an abusive husband. On the reservation, the murder and abuse rate is higher than communities off the reservation and probably higher than anyone knows because many deaths go un-reported. I have friends who are teachers and I am going to recommend this book to them and their students along with some of Sherman Alexie's stories for teens. I would love for there to be good honest discussion between natives and non-natives to try to create a safer life for children on the reservation but there is such a division between natives and non-natives that that doesn't look likely. The graft and corruption within the tribal government is sad but seen as normal so little is done about it. I'm not sure what the solution is, I just know that what we're doing now is not working.
This story caught my attention with its detail of current day "native" lives. It drug a little in the middle of the book because basket ball isn't my sport, but by the time I finished the book I had learned so much about an area, a life style, and a sport I knew nothing about. It was well written and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Definitely worth reading!
A good read. Entertaining colorful language, very detailed and surprisingly accurate to what life was like for a teenage basketball star growing up on an Indian Reservation filled with memories.
What a trip! What insight! What a learning experience!Larry Colton's year on the Crow Indian Rez with the Lady Bulldogs of Hardin, Montana HS was more than a basketball read. For sure, I followed 'x's' and 'o's'..but what I got was a side-long glance at life on the rez. Colton has a way that put you in the Nike's and moccasins of these teen Crow girls and their non-indian buds. It's all there: the hope, the hopelessness, the alcoholism, the squalor, the game..and life after basketball. I savored every page. It was a delight that I looked forward to each day. When it ended...I wanted more.
This story is about the high school and town where I grew up, recognize most of the names and probably went to school with parents/aunts/uncles of most of the people named, including the "sweet grandmotherly" woman at the museum who many have told me is my mother. This story is very accurate and does give a representation of the people, white and indian, in the area.
Mr. Colton presents a clear picture of a struggle on multiple levels. His ability to gain the trust of local families and the girls on the team adds so much to making the book possible. A very helpful and instructive experience in learning a lot about how the wonderful lead character matures, falls and picks herself up, a lot due to the influence and support of Mr. Colton I'm guessing.Well written and an unbiased as could probably be about some unsettling behaviors of both adults and kids growing up.
A heartening story of a Native American girls high school basketball team who together win a state championship. A good read and gives insight to life on the reservation.
