About the Author
Joseph Steinfield was born and raised in Claremont, New Hampshire, where he graduated from Stevens High School in 1957. He is a graduate of Brown University and Harvard Law School. He was formerly a partner at Hill & Barlow in Boston and is currently a member of the Boston firm of Prince Lobel Tye LLP, where he specializes in litigation and media law. He is a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers and an adjunct professor of law at Boston College Law School and University of New Hampshire Law School. He has also lectured at several universities and has taught American law at two universities in Russia. He and his wife, Virginia Eskin, live in Boston and in Jaffrey, New Hampshire.

I think almost anyone who grew up in Claremont would enjoy this book--but so would other people! Joe is a great writer, and I have begged him to write another book, an in-depth story of the immigrant experience. In this current book, Joe's stories are "human", meaning everyone can relate to them, they are part of the human experience.When reading these stories, it is important to remember that each story was a newspaper column--this is not a novel with a continuous plot. I read a lot of books, and the best ones are when I can identify, either with a character, a feeling or an experience. Because Joe is such a good story-teller, it is very easy to identify.
Joe Steinfield doesn't need a thousand pages to tell a story. In a series of concise articles, he describes encounters with greats (Duke Ellington, Dom DiMaggio, Daniel Ellsberg) and near-greats like his teachers, Dick Morris, and the man responsible for Boston's annual Christmas tree. He pays tribute to Jewish ancestors who emigrated from Poland, landed in Chelsea, Massachusetts, and trekked westward to Claremont, New Hampshire. He describes travels with his wise and talented wife The Pianist. Best of all, his memories capture the spirt of growing up in America, where the game was baseball, the language, English, with some Yiddish, and life was "wonderful".
Joe Steinfield sure has interesting relatives and acquaintances. His descriptions of life's experiences, from small town to the major leagues of legal representation, are very interesting and easy to relate to, even for those who did not get to the majors. All small towners should read this.
There was too much about family and practically nothing about the City of Claremont save the last chapter which was quite enjoyable. Otherwise, it was a disappointing book.
If you grew up in Claremont in the 50's or 60's, you will have a very nostalgic experience. Even if you didn't, there are many enjoyable stories that will leave you chuckling.The reader is left with an appreciation for what it was like to grow up in a small town in a more innocent time.
