Warning: the following review may contain spoilersI don't usually like to pay as much for books as I did for this one, but having seen and loved the film adaption I badly wanted to read the actual story. And as it turned out, the book was worth every cent!Alone Yet Not Alone is the story (based on true events that happened to ancestors of the author) of two young German sisters who settle with their family in Pennsylvania, during the French and Indian war. Their house is invaded by hostile Indian braves, their father and brother killed, and they themselves are captured, along with their best friend, Marie; separated, and adopted into various Indian tribes. The story is about their lives as Indian maiden, and how all they had to hold on to were the Scripture verses their father had used to teach them, and the song, Alone Yet Not Alone, that their mother used to sing.I really loved this book, it's one of the best stories I've ever read, and I would highly recommend it.

Age Appropriate For: 8 and upBest for Ages: 8-15This is based on a true story. It is the kind of story one would expect to have been made up. Yet, isn’t it just like God? His stories are always amazing, and his provision for his children often leaves me speechless. The almost impossibility of this story is what is amazing.Clearly, this book is targeted for youth. While young-adults and even adults might find it interesting, youth will get the most out of it. The style of the story is simple, yet never talks down to the youth it reaches. The faith message is strong and the point of the whole story. It is about how, even when things are at their worst, God will never leave us. We are never alone. That concept is one all of us need to be reminded of from time to time.Barbara was a character of great faith but also wasn’t perfect. She is a character that I think many girls can relate to. She is also a good example of a strong girl, a loving sister, and a devoted daughter of Jesus. This would be a fantastic book for homeschool kids to understand the human cost of the French and Indian war. Many homes were burned by the Indians and many women and children carried off. Void of the graphicness of some books, this captures many of the emotions that the captives experienced.I highly recommend this to young readers who enjoy history, faith-filled fiction, and courageous girls.

Alone but not alone/ I thoroughly enjoyed the gbook. I espeically enjoy books based on true stories and the one is. I can't imagine a more terrifying exerience due for early pioneers then to witnes such brutality and be ripped into another as foreign as the Indian tribes were at that time. The faith and hope learned from their father was a solid rock assurance God would never leave them alone....no matter, the time ou years, He would never leave them alone.

Mrs. Craven took a family story and delivered the truth of the experience so that readers could identify with the three girls and two boys who were restored to their own people through their continued faith and the grace of God. There is no attempt to condemn others for failing to do so but a realistic gratitude for guidance and grace in answer to prayer and faithful belief in the God of the Bible. The historical lesson and spiritual enlightenment of this book is well worth the reading.

Alone Yet Not Alone was a fascinating story in itself. Our paternal great grandmother was a Leininger; which made the book that much more fascinating. It was hard to put down, once I started reading, knowing my family is distantly related.

Riveting true story of pioneer children kidnapped from their pioneer home in the wilds of western Pennsylvania. How the surviving children, clinging to their faith in God, and to hopes of returning home, miraculously escaped after over a decade of captivity and were reunited with their family. Gives a deeper perspective on the price the settlers had to pay to create a country out of the wilderness.

This is a short, easy to read book that is intended for children, but the content has so much substance that it is satisfying to an adult mind. I read it in one sitting, and enjoyed every minute.I wish I could know more of the details that have long since been buried with the people who actually lived this out, but the story that remains for subsequent generations has so much of value that it should be given to every young person to read. Even though parts of the tale have been lost over the years, I'm glad the author stuck to the facts that are known without embellishing. It doesn't need to be completed.I'm glad that this book has been made into a movie and look forward to seeing it when I get a chance.

I've been reading this story with my children in the evening as part of our learning of American history. They are on the edge of their seats attentive to this book. Their eyes are wide with excitement as they process the story. My children range in ages from almost 4 to 10. The chapters are the perfect length for them and they are fascinated with the storyline. I love it because they are learning a part of history from it. I highly recommend this as a read-aloud with your family or as a chapter book you'd encourage your child to read on their own.
