This was a really fun, engrossing book. Like several others have said, I devoured this book in two sittings and was left with a big smile on my face. I truly felt the ups and downs of their motorcycle adventures and enjoyed accompanying them to some of the most fun, beautiful and amazing landmarks around the country. I also felt honored that the Lahmans gave us a window into some very personal aspects of their life and relationship. With so much reality TV, the thoughtless divulging of the most private information has become the unfortunate norm; Two-Up is the antithesis of the mindless TMI-genre, reading more like a bravely honest conversation with a trusted friend. Thank you for sharing your life, love and fun!
I couldn't wait for _Two Up_ to hit the Kindle, and I wasn't disappointed! Read the book in a couple of days; once I started, I didn't want to put it down! As a former long distance pillion, I could relate to so many of Lynda's experiences, but this book will appeal to a wide audience! Lynda's writing flows so easily, and she tells her story beautifully. She eloquently describes her many, many miles on the back of a motorcycle, from the physical endurance required, to the humorous moments, to the emotional ups and downs. At the root of the story, though, is the wonderful relationship that blossoms through the miles and over the years; it's a unique bond that grows through teamwork that can be grueling, but so very, very rewarding!! Great job, Lynda. I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it!
A really interesting look at the world of long-distance motorcycling. This is a sport that we generally think of as a solitary pursuit, but what could be a more intimate trip than 11,000 miles around the country in 11 days on a motorcycle ridden two-up? Lynda tells a compelling story of the journey of she and her husband/partner Terry through both life and North America. Lynda is a counselor, and she brings a therapist's insight to the crazy world of this sport. Highly recommended to anyone interested in travel and relationships - not just to motorcyclists.Ralph
A wonderful book! While long distance riders are a very small number (and long distance pillions even more minute), I think this book will appeal to a far larger audience. It is truly two stories in one. Not only does Lynda capture the excitement, adventure, drama, agony and ecstasy of our particular sport, she candidly addresses the fears and concerns (again, excitement, adventure, drama, agony and ecstasy) faced by millions of middle-aged women who are "navigating a relationship" while perhaps still carrying cargo from the past. Having navigated both roads myself, I can attest to the accuracy and insights of her book.
Two-Up: Navigating a Relationship 1,000 miles at a time is a book written about the 2007 Ironbutt Rally with a twist. Usually this rally is ridden by a sole rider. This one is two up meaning a rider and passenger which increases the difficulty level by at least 50% if not more. The Ironbutt Rally is like the Olympics of Long Distance Motorcycle Touring and is held once every two years. The book was well written and I loved to see a women's point of view while dealing with the stresses of training to get into the event as well as the rally itself. It brought new insight in what two different personalities can accomplish in an eleven day event. A well written, to the point, easy to read book without too much fluff. I rate this book on the same level as Ron Ayer's Against The Wind, a book about the 1995 Ironbutt Rally. A very well written book, which should be on every long distance rider's book shelf.
This book was very well written and informative. The author weaves a personal narrative with the challenges of "Iron Butt Racing". A sport which I have to admit, I had no knowlege existed. But what the heck? There's something new to learn every day. And besides, I have always had a fascination with motorcycles since me mate Nick and I used to travel around West LA on my Honda 90 back in 1966/67. Those were some pretty crazy days. Peace and Love and all that bit... Later, I was a high school teacher in Death Valley and used to watch Europeans come and ride in the deserts on rented Harley's living out some kind of "Easy Rider" fantasy ( I have to admit I was envious), Though I didn't understand a word of Italian, or French or whatever language it was they were speaking. The language is universal. Getting on a bike, cruising under the wide open sky. It's "FREEDOM". Isn't that what America is all about? Isn't that what LIFE is all about. You only go around once, don't waste it. So any advice I might offer to cyclists everywhere is - Keep on riding. Just be careful as there are alot of maniacs to dodge out on the highways. Peace from New Zealand.
I enjoy every book I can find about LD riding and this was no exception. Well written and interesting new perspective from the back seat on rally riding!
Having been a biker and quitting after an accident it was pretty cool to read this story as we've been to some of the places mentioned on our VTX bike and Goldwing trike in almost the same time frame! We had heard of the iron butt but never tried it. We did win a contest for most miles in a day in our state for a local group contest so can relate and we also did a 3,000 mile trip across several states two up. So for a biker this was an interesting story and should be interesting reading for anyone!
