About the Author
Since 1973, Rick Steves has spent about four months a year exploring Europe. His mission: to empower Americans to have European trips that are fun, affordable, and culturally broadening. I have come to rely on the great advice of Rick Steves. I used his tour guide of Ireland to plan a trip several years ago and his information was invaluable. Right now I am using this book to plan a summer trip to Scotland. Rick puts things together for you and tells you how it is. I really like his black triangle rating system of places to see. He makes it easier to decide what places you really should see and what you can miss. Because lets face it you cannot see everything on vacation. He also provides great country specific tips and suggestions. Tips on saving money, renting a car, driving, using your credit card, etc.... His book provides valuable maps and a section an appendix that is chock full of information. I really enjoy how he takes your through the different parts of the country so you get valuable planning ideas. Keep up the good work Rick.
AS I'M FROM SCOTLAND AND KNOW THE COUNTRY VERY WELL, THIS BOOK COVERED EVERYTHING. EXCELLENT
Rick Steves' authors write the best guide books to Europe, but this book is mostly just an excerpt of the Scotland section of his Great Britain Guide Book. There is no point in buying both.
Rick as always nails it. If you haven't used his books for travel in Europe or the UK, you're spending too much, missing good stuff, and they are also fun to read. Look for his little "nuggets" of humor too...they're in there
This my second Rick Steve guidebook, the first being the one for Germany (very superior guidebook). This book was invaluable for my trip to Scotland, with loads of useful information. I carried it with me all the time and endlessly referenced this book before and while traveling, and even after I got back to remember what I saw/did and the stories behind what I saw/did. The book excels at giving the reader historical information on popular sites, such as Edinburgh and Stirling Castles, and William Wallace Monument, and more. I found the "walking around the city" sections especially helpful. I just wish I had time to read it thoroughly before and during my somewhat last minute and rushed itinerary to find more things to see and do.
This man knows how to travel and he knows how to advise. The best thing he does is cut through just the sheer volume of things to do, restaurants and hotels, etc. on which you need to decide. Will he list every hotel in a city? No, and that's a godsend. Instead he'll give you a list of 10 or so places that you can't go wrong with. It's nice to know you don't need to worry about picking places or things to do that might be a huge failure, scam or waste of time.In the case of Scotland, they actually have a very impressive and helpful tourism website. What I did, and what I would recommend doing, is going on Scotland's website and cross checking places to go and stay with Steve's book. If the website listed a place and Rick Steves said it was awesome, I felt pretty confidant that it would be a good place to explore. From that, you're pretty much guaranteed that you won't have any major disasters on your hands while you travel.His book is also great to have on hand while you're away. Oftentimes we'd have some more flexible day schedules and would look to his book to see what he recommended for a town we hadn't initially planned on visiting. It's also a nice small size so it's not super obvious that you're a tourist!
I used to not be a big fan of his books. But then I got past the hokey-ness and realized there is a lot of good stuff there. I tend to find the country/area guides better than the city guides, but that's just me. I got this the week it came out for a Scotland trip I am taking this summer. By the time it arrived, I thought I had pretty much planned it out. This is my first trip. This book caused me to rethink some things, confirmed others, and got me to revise my itinerary. I don't normally carry entire guidebooks with me. I don't think they're worth the extra weight. This one is going, however.
I was fortunate enough to spend 3 weeks in Edinburgh last spring. Most of that time, I was there for work meeting with folks from the University of Edinburgh but I also took the train to Stirling and the bus to Peebles. I relied heavily on this book to find cheap (but tasty) places to eat, interesting places to visit, and wonderful history lessons. It's written in such a way that you can pull it out while sitting in St Giles Cathedral or wandering Doune Castle and get some backstory right there, or you can easily skip the history and just get the details -- opening hours, ticket prices, etc.Additionally, this book was wonderful in my pre-trip planning. Rick Steves explains all the necessary and perhaps dull details that one really needs to know -- Visas, money exchanges, ATMs (called cash points in Scotland), public transportation, etc. I purchased several guidebooks before this trip, but I used this book every single day during the 3 weeks that I was in Scotland.
