This book was well documented, and did describe a time in American entertainment that was crucial to the development of radio and television (at least for the comedians and hosts of both media). However, Ms. Zemeckis deals very little with the comedians and straight men who made these transitions. She mainly interviews and talks about the strippers. They are interesting, but honestly their lives got a little tiring after a point. I understand that their lives existed within a tiny community. She does a good job of humanizing the female entertainers who are often scorned in society. But, I found myself getting tired of the book long before it was over.
I have always had an interest in the lives of people who live and work in the nether worlds that most of us know nothing about - carnivals, circuses, con artists, grifters, strippers, jockeys, etc. Behind the Burly Q is full of these stories. However, the book reads like the author merely gathered up all of her excellent notes and had them published. Often the writing is choppy with short sentences apparently just piled together. It is an interesting book that simply needed editing to clear away the redundancies and to provide continuity. My review - I liked it, but it was longer than necessary and because of the above issues, hard to read.
I made a challenge to myself this past year to read books outside my immediate "go-to" interest realm. I wanted to start learning more about other walks on the path of life and what better way to do that than to hit a bookstore. I was drawn to this book because of the heart I could tell the author put into it in the bio section. I'm always curious about what triggers people's passions. This book was the perfect pace for me & great for quick break reading escapes. I grew up loving the movie "Now and Then" and "A League of Their Own" and the storyline allowed my imagination to paint the same nostalgic "good ole' days" narrative. This is a great book for those who wish to learn more about a part of history they may be curious about OR if they are already an enthusiast. I'm a big believer in we all have positive "shines" to offer the world, and this is a demographic that hasn't had it's proper story told until now.
This book was well researched and quite informative. However, the redundancy of certain topics and events are often repeated. With the wealth of knowledge provided in the the context, I think the author could have used more visuals since this topic is so vast. Fascinating nonetheless for those who wish to be informed of the trials and tribulations many of these young women went through. The sociological aspect and the historical content make for interesting reading. Very informative.
Thank you Ms. Zemeckis for a fascinating and highly entertaining history of Burlesque. This book is carefullyresearched. The material contained in the interviews of the women and men who gave us a vital and uniquelyAmerican stage form gives the story authenticity and liveliness. Bava!
The author of this book gives us a succinct and engrossing history of burlesque and its practitioners, mostly in their own words. Through a combination of expert interviewing and lucid writing the author transforms names from the marquee into living, breathing people; you may not always like them but you will believe in them.
This book would have been more honestly billed as a transcript of the interviews Zemeckis did for the documentary. Her writing is earnest but painfully elementary. There's little structure and almost no coherent historical or cultural context and what little there is suffers from an over-reliance on Shteier's book on the same subject. "Behind" is useful for reference as it contains quotations from and pictures of the performers, but not for much else.
This book really holds your interest. I knew a lot of the names of their stars but never saw them perform. So many TV comics that were famous started in Burlesque .These women were pioneers in their day.
